Overview

The BLHS English department offers the following classes: English I-4, Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, and Yearbook. The department consists of Kim Baxley, Libby Newman, Christy Dawkins, Donielle Hartley (Department Head), and Nicholas Sessions.

"To become college and career ready (CCR), students must grapple with works of exceptional craft and thought whose range extends across genres, cultures, and centuries. Such works offer profound insights into the human condition and serve as models for students' own thinking and writing. Along with the high-quality contemporary works, texts [are] chosen from among seminal United States documents, the classics of American literature, and the timeless dramas of Shakespeare. Through wide and deep reading of literature and literary nonfiction of steadily increasing sophistication, students gain a reservoir of literary and cultural knowledge, references, and images; the ability to evaluate intricate arguments; and the capacity to surmount the challenges posed by complex texts" (CCSS - ELA, p. 35).

To meet the requirements for a South Carolina High School Diploma, students must earn four units in English. If enrollment warrants, AP English will be taught, implementing the National AP curriculum. Midlands Technical College teaches English 101 and 102, following their own curriculum. All English students will have recommended summer reading.
