Lexington Three Chosen For Farm to School Pilot Project

Lexington County School District Three was recently selected as the sole district in the state of South Carolina to participate in the South Carolina Farm to School Procurement Pilot Project.

Last year, the South Carolina Farm to School Program received a United States Department of Agriculture grant to implement the project. The project will span two years and will allow Lexington Three to expand the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables being utilized in our schools, create a roadmap to help navigate the procurement process of local specialty crops, and further educate staff on the preparation of fresh fruit and vegetables with culinary training. Staff will also get to participate in a cookbook that will be published.

Melinda O'Connell, Lexington Three's Director of Child Nutrition, applied on behalf of Lexington Three to be part of the Farm to School Pilot Project and was notified that we were selected as the model district last week. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase the capacity of school districts to purchase and use unprocessed, fresh fruits and vegetables in their child nutrition programs while supporting South Carolina farmers and agriculture.
